Golf is a gentleman’s sport, but extortionate green fees mean that often, you’ve got to be a very wealthy gentleman to enjoy the game. Thankfully, Toronto and the surrounding areas offer a solid selection of affordable courses, so you can spend your summer on the greens without breaking the bank.

Dentonia

Best deal: Twilight rate, weeknights, $18
Accessible by TTC, Dentonia offers a ridiculously cheap twilight fee, and its steep hills and fast greens will sharpen any short game. 781 Victoria Park, 416-392-2558.

Copetown Woods Golf Club
Best deal:
Twilight rate, weekends, $45
This open, links-style course, is always immaculate. Warm up at the great practice facility, or have a nine-hole round of PowerPlay golf for $30. 1430 Concession 2 West, Copetown, 905-627-4653.

Whispering Ridge

Best deal:
Dinner and a round, weeknights, $37
Hackers graduating to intermediate will like Whispering Ridge. The executive-style, 18-hole course, includes plenty of par-threes, and some serious challenges (the 11th hole is all uphill). 1355 Brawley Rd., Brooklin, 905-428-6321.

North Granite Ridge

Best deal:
18 holes, $60
In pricey Muskoka, this secluded, forest-laden course is a steal. Slicers be warned: The trees lining the narrow fairway are unforgiving. 476 South Mary Lake Rd., Port Sydney, 705-385-0808.

Markham Green Golf Club

Best deal:
Replay fee, weekdays, $14
Dense cedar trees, sand traps and the Rouge River protect most holes on this short but tough course. Shoot straight. And don’t panic. 120 Rouge Bank Drive, Markham, 905-294-6156.
