Crafting the Perfect Cocktail for a Virtual Happy Hour

Missing that camaraderie of being at the bar, clinking glasses with your buddies?

Try a virtual happy hour, in these wacky days of isolation.

We’re recommending you start with Appleton Estate Jamaican rum. For my tasting, I decided to create a ‘Jamaican Mule.’

It’s a simple recipe of Appleton Estate rum, ginger beer, a splash of bitters, and some lime wedges. It takes only seconds to make and presents nicely in a tall glass – though, a traditionalist might serve it in a copper mug – a light amber color. The alcohol gives off a fruity scent, almost tropical, with a hint of pineapple. Like most rums, there is a hint of brown sugar in the scent as well.

At first taste, the rum is smooth, but also bold. There is a bite to it that mixes well with the ginger beer upon a few sips, and the note throughout the beverage is a deep sweetness that reminds me of molasses. Its strong ‘rummy’ flavor lends itself to being mixed with other things more than for sipping. At a lower price point, it’s a great choice for your fancy cocktails without breaking the budget.

Appleton Estate rum boasts their fermentation uses non-GMO molasses and non-GMO naturally occurring yeast. No additives are used to affect taste, nor aroma profiles.

This year, in fact, began the international rollout of their newly-designed packaging, including a re-imagined bottle and label, and the release of a new premium blend.

The new 8 Year Old Reserve is the most versatile expression of aged rum, revealing aromas of spicy fruit and oak, followed by hints of honey, vanilla and our signature orange peel note.

Showcasing Appleton Estate’s renowned aging inventory is the redesigning of a permanent 15 Year Old Black River Casks rum. Perfect for sipping neat or on the rocks, the 15 Year Old Black River Casks is a rich and full-bodied rum, that reveals aromas of toasted almond, and delicate hazelnut, followed by notes of intense orange peel, rich vanilla and subtle hints of medium roasted coffee and molasses. It is expected to launch next year.

Appleton Estate rums are produced from “cane to cup,” with each step of the production process carefully managed – from harvest and creation of molasses to distillation, blending and bottling. Every barrel used in their blends is hand selected by Master Blender Joy Spence and her team.

For over 265 years, Appleton Estate has been crafting authentic, premium rums using time honored traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation.
