Never heard of a whisky smash? It’s actually a very, very, very old-school cocktail, mentioned in the first bartending guide ever published in the United States, Jerry Thomas’ How to Mix Drinks. He also invented the original flaming cocktail, the Blue Blazer.
Anyway, this version of the whisky smash puts a Scottish twist on things—which is the best kind of twist to put on things.
Ingredients
1.5 oz Famous Grouse
Black current juice
Splash of soda
1 tsp. sugar
Black currents
Lemon wedge
Directions
In a shaker, muddle the black currents and sugar. Add the whisky, black current juice, and ice, and shake vigorously. Strain into a rocks-filled glass, add a splash of soda, and garnish with a lemon wedge.
