Mexico has brought the world many great things: tequila, sombreros, “The Real Cancun.” But perhaps no contribution is as great as the taco. Who knew the humble tortilla could hold so much potential? Here, Vancouver’s best bites.
Doña Cata: Barbacoa de Borrego
Visit this colourful cantina for the braised spicy lamb loin taco. Top it with cilantro salad and your choice of 10 homemade salsas. $2. 5076 Victoria Dr., 604-436-2232.
Bandidas Taqueira: Ronny Russell
This eco-friendly eatery serves up unique tacos on handmade corn tortillas. Try the Ronny Russell, stuffed with roasted yams and onions, fresh guacamole, black beans, green salsa, purple cabbage and pumpkin seeds. $5 for two. 2781 Commercial Dr., 604-568-8224.
Go Fish: Tacones
Fish tacos don’t get any fresher than this. This False Creek waterfront shack sources its sustainable salmon from local fishermen, grills it and rolls it up in a tortilla with cilantro salsa, chipotle sour cream and Pacific Rim coleslaw. $5. 1505 West 1st Ave., 604-730-5040.
La Taqueria: Al Pastor
Reminiscent of a Mexican street taco stand, this downtown joint specializes in meaty choices. We recommend the Al Pastor, which features Chilliwack pork marinated in chili, achiote and pineapple. $2.50 each. 322 West Hastings St., 604-568-4406.
Deuce Bungalow: Pulled Chipotle Chicken
This “spanglish cantina” in the Entertainment District is the sexiest spot in town to tuck into tacos. Try the pulled chipotle chicken, which comes with spiced red avocado pilaf. $10. 980 Granville St., 604-688-2969.
