Cross-Country Skiing in Calgary

We live in the Prairies, the flattest lands known to man. Sure, the Rockies are accessible, but the flatlands are our true home. And they can get mighty boring. This weekend, cut through the monotony: Strap on some skis and bypass those pesky lift lines for a good old-fashioned winter workout.

Shaganappi Golf Course
Total trailage: 5 km
It’s a great place to golf in the summer but an even better place to ski in the winter. Located in the middle of the city and open to the public day and night, Shaganappi attracts a roster of volunteers who set the track to ensure it’s ready for the weekend with packed and preserved snow. 1200 26th St. SW, 403-282-4122.

Canada Olympic Park
Total trailage:
2.2 km
Chinooks can put a damper on cross-country ski days, but thanks to COP’s extensive snow-making efforts, pristine groomed trails are available throughout the winter, as are warming huts, concessions, rentals, lessons and more. 88 Canada Olympic Dr. SW, 403-247-5452.

Hawk Ridge Centre
Total trailage:
6 km
Five minutes from Spruce Meadows on the 22X highway, Hawk Ridge offers a great mix of groomed and track-set terrain to suit skiers of all skill levels. And non-skiers will be happy too, with the well-equipped lodge, complete with a cozy fireplace and more. Box 32, Site 5, RR#8, 403-256-4108.
