The $293 Million Nap

From now on, no matter how costly your mistake at work, at least you’ll be able to say, “Hey, at least I didn’t take a nap, land on my keyboard, and accidentally transfer millions of Euros out of my bank.”

Yes, that actually happened. A hapless German banker “momentarily fell asleep” and transferred €222,222,222 from a retired employee’s account. The error was found and fixed hours later, but—and this is the astonishing part—only after a supervisor responsible for overseeing the bank’s payments missed the mistake.

The supervisor, who, upon investigation, was found to have spend a scant 1.4 seconds examining a total of 603 payments, was fired. The banker who initially transferred the funds was merely disciplined.
