$5,000 EV Incentive Starts In May, Tesla Models Ineligible

The $5,000 incentive for owners of electric vehicles takes effect on May 1, and the federal government just released its list of qualified vehicles. You will not see any Tesla models on the list because the incentive includes a $45,000 price limit.

“To be eligible for incentives, a vehicle must have a base-model manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000 for passenger vehicles with six or fewer seats, and less than $55,000 for vehicles with seven or more seats,” the government said (via Electrek). “For eligible vehicles with six or fewer seats, higher-priced versions (trims) are eligible as long as the final manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $55,000 or less.”

All of the most popular electric vehicles are eligible for the incentive, excluding Tesla models, which have a higher MSRP. There is one exception. The Chevy Bolt EV has an MSRP of CAD$46,945 but is included in the list because the federal incentive can be combined with other provincial incentives, noted Electrek. The Chevy Bolt EV would start at only CAD$34,000 in Quebec.

While Tesla Model 3 is the most popular all-electric vehicle in the country, it has an MSRP of $53,700 on its website. A base Model 3 can be purchased for $47,000 as an off-the-menu item offline, according to the manufacturer. It’s unclear whether Tesla will make an arrangement with the government to make its Model 3 qualify for the program.
