The minimum price of beer in Quebec will rise slightly on April 1, according to the province’s Liquor Authority (RACJ). The cost will increase between 2 and 2.3 percent, depending on the alcohol content, reports CTV News.
The rise marks the highest increase in Quebec in seven years. The province is known for being the cheapest place in Canada to purchase beer, particularly when compared to provinces such as Ontario.
The minimum price for beer sold at a grocery store will be $3.0372 per litre for beer with less than 4.1 percent alcohol by volume. Beer with more than 6.2 percent alcohol will cost $3.4395 per litre. This translates to about $6 for a six pack of light beer or approximately a minimum of $6.90 for other types of beer.
Currently, nearly all convenience stores in Quebec sell beer for much higher than the legal minimum price, according to DepQuebec, which represents depanneur owners.
Stores such a Costco and discounters like Depanneur Rapido will be required to increase their prices in April.
