A contemporary French restaurant in Toronto tops Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list for the third consecutive year. Alo once again took the number-one spot, and chef-owner Patrick Kriss was also named Canada’s Most Outstanding Chef. In addition, two of his other establishments made the top 100—Aloette (#35) and Alobar (#65). Rounding out the top three on the list are Joe Beef and Toqué!, both in Montreal.
Alo’s dining room features blind, multi-course tasting menus complemented with wine. The barroom features cocktails and a sharing-style, à la carte menu with raw seafood, meat-based entrées, vegetable-focused sides and desserts.
Toronto has the most restaurants on the list with 26, followed by Montreal (25), and Vancouver (14). Nearly 100 chefs, restaurateurs, food writers, and other culinary connoisseurs from across Canada teamed up to compile the list.
“Three of the restaurants in this year’s top 10 have never been ranked that high before—so congratulations are due to St. Lawrence in Vancouver, Le Mousso in Montreal and Giulietta in Toronto,” said Jacob Richler, editor-in-chief of the guide to Canada’s 100 best restaurants. “Actually, doubly so for Giulietta, which debuts on our list at number 9–the highest placement for a new restaurant since Alo opened at number 7 in 2016. Needless to say Giulietta is our 2019 Best New Restaurant.”
Twenty-four per cent of the eateries made the list for the first time. Sixteen are brand-new restaurants.
“For the past five years we have promoted remarkable and incredibly talented chefs and restaurant teams from every corner of this country – and that’s evident with the number of new restaurants that have been included on the list,” Richler noted.
Special designations include Lifetime Achievement Award (Normand Laprise of Toqué!), Best Pastry Chef (Celeste Mah of Raymonds), Most Innovative Chef (Antonin Mousseau-Rivard of Le Mousso), and Most Eco-Friendly Restaurant (River Café).
