Some people like camping because it takes them off the grid. If you’re not one of those people, perhaps the InReach SE ($300) is for you. It doesn’t handle voice communication, but it does use the Iridium satellite network to send and receive texts. Everything from “Hey, did my Amazon order come in?” to “Eaten poison berries; send help; I’ve made a huge mistake” will be at your fingertips.
The InReach SE’s SOS capabilities are obviously it’s most attractive feature. After triggering an SOS, the phone will confirm message delivery and allow you to have a text conversation with rescuers.
Know who would’ve wanted one of these? That 127 Hours boulder guy. Also, anyone with a Canadian cellular carrier.
