Turns out nearly everything can have a remote. How? Well, with ZAP ($30 for two remotes and five electrical plugs). Pick an appliance you want to be able to switch on and off with a remote—say, the lamp. You unplug the lamp, plug in a ZAP electrical plug, then stick the lamp’s plug into the electrical plug. The electrical plug receives a signal from the remote, so now you can activate your lamp from across the room. Remotes can handle up to five devices.
