Where to Propose in Vancouver

The proposal: She’ll remember it for the rest of her life and she wants a good story to share with her friends when they demand, “So, how did he ask you?” You don’t want to disappoint; lucky for you Vancouver is blessed with beautiful scenery and many romantic nooks. Naturally, you want to do something original, but here are some ideas for settings that will surely have her swooning — and running to tell her girlfriends.

At the Peak of Vancouver
The perfect setting for the outdoorsy couple, Grouse Mountain (pictured) has a handful of options for the green groom-to-be. In the winter, you can get down on one knee while snowshoeing (warning: she may think you tripped), pop the question while your chair sways on the lift (save the ring for when you’re on solid ground) or ask for her hand while enjoying a sleigh ride. With spring upon us, you may consider waiting for the Grind to open, and giving her the reward of a lifetime at the top of the challenging hike. Scenic spring chairlift rides on the new Peak Chair will also be starting soon. Finally, The Observatory is one of Vancouver’s finest restaurants, boasting views of misty mountains, lush forests, the sparkling sea and the city you call home. Book a window table for two, and it’s sure to be a memorable meal.

On the Rocky Mountaineer
Train travel is perhaps the most romantic way to get around. Combine that with the most stunning natural scenery in Western Canada and you truly have a trip to remember. We recommend the Vancouver to Whistler Sea to Sky Climb, which will take you through Howe Sound and the Coast Mountains, and seats in the Whistler Dome Coach for the best views and service. You’ll have three and a half hours to pop the question — perhaps you’ll want to do it as you traverse the trestle bridge or pass the rugged snow-capped peaks of the Tantalus Mountains. You may want to keep a keen eye out for the perfect location on the way up and surprise her on your return journey. There are a number of travel packages available offering stays, activities and more proposal options in Whistler.

On the Water
Take her out for an early meal on Granville Island (Bridges is our favourite island eatery) and then suggest taking the sea ferry across to Yaletown for a cocktail. Instead of getting on a ferry with a bunch of tourists, book a private boat in advance and enjoy a spectacular sunset cruise. (False Creek Ferries and the Aquabus are both keen to accommodate: When the moment is right, give a nod to your captain who will slow the boat for your memorable moment.) More adventuresome ladies may enjoy a double kayak ride to remember; Ecomarine offers rentals from Granville Island, English Bay and Jericho Beach.

Along the Seawall
Conservative couples will enjoy this classic proposal: Rent a tandem bicycle from Spokes, pack a picnic and head into Stanley Park along the seawall. Scope it out in advance and find a few spots that suit you. If your perfect place is taken by the time you roll around, you might have to circle the seawall again, or prepare a few backups. There are plenty of beach nooks where you can enjoy a private moment.
