Style Trends: Harry Rosen

While our calenders put us in February, spring has most definitely arrived: It’s in full swing under the spotlights of retailers coast to coast. Yes, it can be hard to shift your coat-and-scarf mentality for thoughts of warmer days and their more casual outfits ahead, but Spring 2012 style trends are happening now. Here are a few we recently picked up from the folks at top menswear retailer Harry Rosen.

Soft Jackets
A non-negotiable essential in any man’s wardrobe, the sports jacket’s latest iteration boasts a softer, less-tailored look, be it for the office or a casual brunch date. On the business side, look for texture to offset a muted colour palette. A basket-weave or a fine twill will add richness without any additional weight and help to keep you cooler when the sun does finally decide to come out. A washed cotton or jersey jacket pairs well with distressed and coloured jeans or even a cargo short. Look for sporty details like exterior patch pockets, contrast stitching or metal buttons or snaps.

Orange
In all hues, orange has made its way from womenswear to menswear this season, perhaps due to Pantone choosing the vibrant Tangerine Tango as 2012’s colour of the year. As with any accent, less is more. All on trend: Bright orange belts by Etro and Robert Graham, fine-gauge V-neck sweaters in coral by John Smedley ($225) and silk pocket squares ($90 and up) — but wear them sparingly, and matched with muted greys and neutral beiges for greater effect. Daring dressers can opt for coloured jeans like Citizens of Humanity’s soft orange wash ($235).

Socks Off
If you needed proof that the ’80s are back, look no further than the latest trend: no socks. This season, pants are tapered through to the ankle and are meant to be rolled up; that goes for casual suits as well as jeans. Show a little skin with a soft desert boot (you may even have a pair from last year, if you took our advice), a brown loafer,  a suede runner or a driving moccasin.

Soft Scent
The most talked about fragrance of the season is, without a doubt, Lavender Palm, the latest from the Tom Ford Private Blend Collection. Created using two types of lavender, Lavandin and Lavender Absolute, its top notes are sweet and citrusy, while bottom notes of tonka bean and wood give the cologne a strong, masculine base ($250).
