Until my girlfriend bought me a manual and self-winding automatic timepiece from Stuhrling Original, I’d discarded any notion that I needed a watch. Watches seemed ancient and stupid in a world ruled by smartphones.
But something happened every time I wound the watch, fastened it around my wrist and went out into the world. My watch started conversations. Friends took notice first, but soon coworkers extended compliments from across the boardroom table. One night, I attended a high-priced work event at the Liberty Grand, where a stranger and I became fast friends all because of my watch’s sophistication.
There are plenty of ways to keep time, but wearing a watch allows you to accessorize your personality. You can search watches online and find all the usual suspects: Movado, Guess, Tag Heuer, Nixon or Rolex. But if you’re in the market for something that will spark curious glances, check out these five watches from Stuhrling Original, a Swiss watchmaker.
Meteorite Tourbillon
The meteorite finish on the face is a nice addition, but this watch’s magnetic feature is the inclusion of a tourbillon—it’s that funky looking thing on the lower half of the watch’s face. A tourbillon was devised as a way to improve a watch’s time-keeping accuracy. But for anyone who asks, tourbillon means high end. As in this watch’s tourbillon signals my high-end and refined tastes.
Delphi Apollo
I own this watch so that’s a vote of confidence. It’s bold and the skeleton design exposes the watch’s inner workings, which have held my attention through many a boring meeting. Whenever a situation calls for making a strong impression, I strap on this piece.
Prestige Laureate
Maybe it’s the roman numerals or the brown alligator strap, but this watch is confident and classic without being crass. This piece is a must-have for fans of the yacht-club look. And it helps that it’s water resistant up to 100 meters, just in case you’re better at styling out than staying on board.
Victory Elite
If gold clashes with your style or attire, revert to this silver-coloured watch with a mesh bracelet. This piece has a foldover clasp and the red accent gives it an additional spark. And if you love a watch with doodads, the Victory Elite has hour, minutes and chronograph seconds settings, plus a 24 hour indicator.
Kingston Elite
What you’ll like about this watch is its rose tone case (though it also comes in silver and gold) and the gunmetal dial. It’s understated, no fancy adornments included here, which makes it the perfect fit for the man who loves minimalism.
