Many people experience financial problems at some point in their lives. It may be due to a job loss, divorce, student loans, or large medical bills. But when a major celebrity makes headlines for having money problems, it can be a real head scratcher.
Johnny Depp is an A-list star with a slew of blockbusters on his resume. In 2016 alone, he made $48 million. Yet, due to various factors, he is in very bad financial shape. The actor is currently immersed in a legal battle with his management company. He is suing them for $25 million for mismanaging his funds, claiming they caused him to lose millions of dollars.
They, in turn, have countersued and pointed out that Depp spends $2 million a month on his lavish lifestyle. The Management Group (TMG) insists that Depp refused to listen to his advisors about reigning in his spending habits and that’s one of the reasons why he’s running out of money.
According to CNBC, the TMG lawsuit claims: “Depp, and Depp alone, is fully responsible for any financial turmoil he finds himself in today.”
So, what has Depp been buying every month that costs so much money? He reportedly spends $30,000 on wine alone. It’s been rumored that he has problems with alcohol. His ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of beating her up while inebriated, and his drinking allegedly caused problems on the set of “The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” in 2015.
Depp pays his staff of 40 full-time employees $300,000 each month and his security detail $150,000. The actor also prefers to avoid throngs of fans by traveling on a private jet. That sets him back $200,000 a month.
In addition to his monthly expenses, Depp has accrued 14 houses as well as a village in France. Because who doesn’t want their own village? The town includes a church, restaurant, and several homes. The star tried to sell it in 2016 for $63 million. In 2004, he bought a chain of islands in the Bahamas for $3.6 million. In 2007, he spent $7.4 million on five penthouses in the same building in Los Angeles. During his divorce from Heard last year, he tried to sell them for $12.7 million.
Depp also owns 70 guitars and has spent millions on dozens of luxury cars. He spent $18 million on a yacht and requires 12 storage units to house all the Hollywood memorabilia he has purchased over the years.
One way Depp can regain financial stability (in addition to selling off properties and possessions) is to keep working. He has several films in production, including “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2.” If he negotiates hefty paychecks for all future projects, he may be able to dig himself out of his financial mess.
