Calgary’s Best Public Workspaces

The 9 to 5 is old news. For many 21st century workers, the office is wherever they want it to be. It can be a cottage in the Rockies, or a chateau in the south of France, but for most of us, it’s a local pub or coffee shop – somewhere with robust wi-fi, and, hopefully, robust espresso. Here, some of our favourite spots to work remotely in Calgary.

Oolong Tea House
Serving over 150 types of loose leaf tea, this traditional tea house is mellow, all folk music and black-and-white photos. Bonus: Free refills. 110 10th St. NW, 403-283-0333; 26 McKenzie Towne Gate SE, 403-984-9300.

Unicorn Pub
This traditional pub is surprisingly quiet during the day; the best part, however, comes in the late afternoon, as your workday transitions inevitably into a cinq à sept. 304 8 Ave SW, 403-234-8816.

Higher Ground
This skylight-filled café is cozy, thanks to a gas fireplace, and colourful, thanks to African art on the walls. Plenty of outlets make plugging in easy, and an 11 p.m. closing time means you can start your workday well after lunch. 1126 Kensington Rd., 403-270- 3780.

Café Rosso
Home to what may be the city’s finest latté, and positively addictive scones (baked in-house, like everything), Rosso’s motto is Eat. Sip. Stay. And we think it’s a great idea. 15, 803-24 Ave. SE, 403-971-1800.

Glenmore Square Library
Tucked away far from the downtown buzz, this is part library, part writers’ retreat. Avoid coffee shop conversation in cozy, quiet serenity. 7740 – 18 Street SE, 403-260-2600.
