Calgary’s Top Cheese Shops

Calgary’s a beef city, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some fine fromage from time to time. The city is home to a number of excellent cheese shops. Presenting some of our favourites:

Janice Beaton Fine Cheese (pictured)
With two upscale locations, Janice Beaton sells more than 150 imported cheeses, offering international items, like raw milk gruyere and spicy samarano, alongside Canadian products, like chèvre noir and Salt Spring Island Marcella. 1017 16th Ave. SW; 1249 Kensington Rd. NW

Mercato
Just follow the scent of the finest Parmigiano and you’ll find Mercato: fine-dining restaurant by night, Italian market by day. Mercato offers a taste of the home country, with affordable mozzarella, gorgonzola, mascarpone and more. 2224 4th St. SW

Sylvan Star Cheese

Sylvan Lake dairy farmers produce some damn good gouda right from the heart of Alberta. Spiced gouda, smoked gouda, baby gouda, you name it; all of their cheeses are made with the milk from their own cows and are lactose free. H6, 4421 Quesnay Wood Dr. SW

Springbank Cheese Co.
Known for both their classic Springbank brand Canadian cheddars as well as an impressive selection of goat’s milk cheeses, this deli is run by one serious cheese family. 2015 14th St. NW

Cloverleaf Cheese

The Cloverleaf headquarters, located in Calgary’s southwest industrial district, aren’t exactly convenient. But with more than 170 different types of cheese on offer – from Asiago to Woolwich Gourmet Goat Brie – it’s well worth the trip. 1201 45th Ave. NE
