Because they share no regional affiliation to any of the teams playing in the league, Canadian NFL fans may be some of the purest on the planet. That’s why you’ll see legions of local Manning backers collide with the Brady bandwagon at pubs and sports bars all over the city this Sunday. Whatever your level of fandom, you need to make a play soon and reserve your table if you want to party publicly for Super Bowl XLVI in Calgary. Here’s a few venues guaranteed not to fumble.
The “heart of the Red Mile” plans one of the biggest Super Bowl bashes in Calgary, year out. With all three levels of the 17th Ave. linchpin open this Sunday, plus $3.50 drink specials, a hearty $6 chili dog pizza offer, and tons of prizes to win — Melrose looks to be keeping its annual promise as a certainty for Super Bowl fun. 730 17 Ave. S.W. 403-228-3566
Likely the most prominent Irish pub in the city, the popular downtown location will have a nice array of big screen TVs and one huge projection set–up for football of the non–European variety come game day. The co–promo Super Bowl effort with Budweiser Canada will offer beer sampling with charming Bud Lite girls, $4 bottles, and “tons of giveaways.” 803 8 Ave. S.W., 403-265-1200
Schanks Sports Grill
Two massive locations perfectly cover the north and south urban sprawl spread for weary Calgary commuters. Both Schanks will provide drink specials, the biggest HD screens in the city, and of course, a bevy of sporting activities you can’t find anywhere else (mini golf, bowling, virtual golf, arcades, and off track betting). The wide–open single floor layout of Schanks also adds to the drama; there’s something about seeing a few hundred fired up diehards react to each snap that’s just money. The Fan 960 will be broadcasting live from the Crowfoot location during the game. 103 Crowfoot Terrace N.W., 9627 Macloed Tr. S., 403-241-2400, 403-253-7300
A solid southwest neighbourhood pub that puts a heavy emphasis on sporting events, Buffalo Bob’s will be serving up 30–cent wings, Molson beer specials, and a high definition feed of the game (complete with U.S. commercials, which you’ll actually be able to hear in the 150–seat pub). For those looking for a lower–key party, Bob’s will provide an intimate setting and friendly staff who’ll treat you like one of the regulars. #126 3715 51 St. S.W., 403-686-1404
St. James Corner
Jameson Pub Group’s third venture in Calgary has fully restored the craic to the historic First Street corner location (formerly the Cherry Lounge, dance club and occasional gang shootout corral). With two floors of friendly Irish ambience and service, St. James is providing a full day of Super Bowl festivities with brunch going from 10 a.m. — 2 p.m. and happy hour running all day long. 1219 1 St. S 403-262-1157
