The best series in the playoffs so far has been the Senators and the Canadiens, because they’ve declared all-out war.
After one of their best forwards, Lars Eller, was taken out with a concussion courtesy of a hit by Senators defenseman Eric Gryba on Saturday night, nerves started to fray.
Then, during game three last night, everything came to a boil. Zack Smith crosschecked Ryan White immediately after a faceoff at centre ice, and White responded with a slash. Then, all the players on the ice, save the goalies, dropped their mitts and let loose.
Afterwards, Montreal coach Michel Therrien claimed that Ottawa coach Paul MacLean had a “total lack of class”, and the Ottawa Citizen had the rare opportunity to shamelessly gloat.
Game four is Tuesday night.
