HBO has released the first piece of footage for the eighth season of Game of Thrones. Unfortunately, it’s just a tiny teaser of the highly anticipated final season.
The 1-minute, 40-second long clip features a variety of shows from HBO’s upcoming lineup for 2019. The GoT footage includes both clips from the seventh season and a quick look at season eight. In the new shot, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is featured embracing his sister Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner). Some believed this was from season seven when they reunited at Castle Rock, but it’s actually the duo reuniting at Winterfell in season eight.
Earlier this summer, HBO programming president Casey Bloys told reporters at the Television Critics Association that the final season of Game of Thrones will air in the first half of 2019. Rumors recently surfaced that the final six episodes would be delayed until mid-2019, but HBO still plans on airing the show early enough so it will be eligible for the 2019 Emmy Awards.
In the meantime, screenwriter and producer Jane Goldman is working on a prequel pilot that is set in the Game of Thrones universe. There’s no word yet on when the series will debut.
The HBO trailer also included a first look at season three of True Detective, starring Mahershala Ali as Wayne Hays, a state police detective in Northwest Arkansas. The network also released a full separate trailer for the show, which premieres in January 2019.
In addition, the trailer featured a glimpse of new seasons of The Deuce, VEEP, Barry, Big Little Lies; footage from Jane Fonda’s documentary, and a look at new series such as The Shop, Camping, Room 104, and My Brilliant Friend.
Notably missing from the network’s trailer was a look at Damon Lindelof’s upcoming Watchmen, based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore.
