With sun, smog and one-too-many late patio drinks, the summer is hell on skin. The rise of the silver fox — guys like Mad Men’s John Slattery and Anderson Cooper — has been a boon to the over-40 crowd (much to the chagrin of the makers of Just For Men, we’re sure) but just because the distinguished look is in doesn’t mean you should look old before your time.
We spoke to Joel Dart, owner of Toronto skincare boutique Jacob and Sebastian for his tips on keeping from looking like an aged Mickey Rooney.
“I prefer to keep things simple,” says Dart. “I suggest double-duty products, so guys can get the most out of a few simple steps. Look for a high-quality face wash that contains gentle enzyme-based ingredients (like papaya fruit extract), so that you can gently remove dead skin cells and boost cell-regeneration every time you cleanse.”
Dart also says it’s important to find an anti-oxidant rich moisturizer with SPF. “Anti-oxidants (like pomegranate or vitamin E), will protect the skin from damaging free-radicals, while an SPF will prevent premature aging and sun damage.”
If you’re looking to go all out, try adding a moisture-rich eye cream, which Dart says will help “de-puff, brighten, tighten and smooth the delicate skin around the eyes.” Dart’s favourite double-duties are Mario Badescu’s Enzyme Cleansing Gel, Malin + Goetz’s SPF 15 Moisturizer and Baxter of California’s Under Eye Complex.
With these few simple steps, you can help slow the aging process. Because you never know when the pendulum will swing back to everyone wanting to look like Justin Bieber again.
