September in Style, Calgary

Whether you squandered your summer or soaked up every last ray of sunshine, it’s probably time to get back down to business. No need to stress: A few stops at a couple choice shops in Calgary will have you looking and feeling ready to face the fall (and the disheartening climate change that comes with it). From the feet up, here’s a few ideas to get you suited up proper.

Shoes
The time for boat shoes and sandals has passed, so stash them in the closet and go for something dressier but still equipped to handle our city’s sudden weather shifts. Try keeping the profile classic with a medium-width wingtip; the closer you can get to looking like Nucky Thompson, the better. For a more casual approach, we suggest these beauties from Comme des Garcons. Available at Gravity Pope, 524 17 Ave. S.W, 403-209-0961.

Shirts
From the mock to the turtle (and if you like it or not, covering the neck is back in style). This French rib half-zip by Ralph Lauren Black Label or navy Henley top by Paul Smith speak to autumn 2011’s show-less-neck mandate. Also, brown suits are big again this fall, but for a more comfortable look, find a thick cardigan (in a brown tone) like this brushed alpaca wool number, from Burberry Brit. For indoors, take a look at these cool logoed t-shirts by Altru. Available at Holt Renfrew, 510 8 Ave. S.W., 403-209-0961.

Jacket
Fall in Calgary is often just the beginning of a three-season winter, so going with a knit peacoat will keep you looking sharp and, more importantly, warm. There’s also this flurry-resistant quilted jacket, for when the weather really turns. Available at Joe Fresh, inside most Superstore locations.

Pants
Brown and neutral tones will make up the palette of the season, so go with a comfy cord or wool pant to bring your whole look together. For a more formal occasion, there’s also a bevy of classic dress pants from Banana Republic’s Mad Men-inspired line. Available at Banana Republic, four locations in Calgary.

Accessories
You don’t want to go crazy with the accessories, but a little flair never hurts. For watches, have a look at Michael Kors Blackout or white ceramic. Also, plaid and wool ties definitely look good in the fall, as does carrying a leather briefcase or messenger bag. Available at Designo Fashion, in Fashion Central YYC, 206 805 1 St. S.W.
