1940s Gymnasium Clock

Why were gymnasium clocks made in the 1940s made of heavy-duty metal, with mesh over the face? We’d like to think that gyms back then were full of moustachioed strongmen, willing to put up their dukes and should “bully!” at the slightest provocation.

Gross historical imagining on our part aside, this reproduction of a 1940s gymnasium clock by Restoration Hardware ($229) features riveted sheet metal, a metal grill, and quartz mechanics. It’s just what Charles Atlas ordered.
