Eating Fruit Cuts Your Risk of Heart Disease

Want an easy way to avoid a heart attack? Brush your teeth. Another easy way? Eat some fruit.

According to some research being presented at the European Society of Cardiology’s annual conference, daily fruit consumption can cut the overall risk of death by 32% and risk of death by cardiovascular disease by 40%.

The findings come courtesy of nearly half a million Chinese people who participated in the study over seven years. 18% of them consumed fruit daily, and 6.3% never consumed any fruit at all. Those eating fruit daily cut their cardiovascular disease by 40%, their risk of ischemic heart disease by 15%, their risk of ischaemic stroke by 25%, and their risk of haemorrhagic stroke by 40%.

According to the researchers, “Our data clearly shows that eating fresh fruit can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, including ischaemic heart disease and stroke (particularly haemorrhagic stroke). And not only that, the more fruit you eat the more your CVD risk goes down. It does suggest that eating more fruit is beneficial compared to less or no fruit.”

Tough to make it clearer than that: eat more fruit, or you die.
