Drinking coffee can add literally minutes to your life. It seems like just yesterday we discovered that men who marry younger women live longer. If they also drink coffee, they may well be immortal.
New international research has found that your morning cup of Joe may also be extending your life.
These studies, which include the largest ever conducted on coffee consumption, have found that drinking even one cup a day reduces your risk of an early death from any cause, and it drastically lowers your chances of dying of digestive problems.
“Pro-rata, that’s as if that cup of coffee puts, on average, around nine minutes on a man’s life, and around three minutes on a woman’s. ” Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, of the Public Understanding of Risk at the University of Cambridge told the Telegraph. “So perhaps we should relax and enjoy it,”
He calculated that a cup of coffee a day extended the average man’s life by three months and a woman’s by a month.
Over the course of the 16 year study, people who drank one cup of coffee daily were 12 per cent less likely to die than those who drank no coffee, the results showed. Drinking two to three cups of coffee reduced the chances of death by 18 per cent.
“If you’re not a coffee drinker, then you need to consider if you should start,” said study author Dr. Veronica Setiawan, associate professor of preventative medicine at the University of Southern California . “Coffee contains a lot of antioxidants and phenolic compounds that play an important role in cancer prevention. Although this study does not show causation or point to what chemicals may have this ‘elixir effect’, it is clear that coffee can be incorporated into a healthy diet and lifestyle.”
Also, if you drink coffee before your workout, you’ll perform better and burn more calories faster.
