Energy Expenditure During Sex

Trying to hit your recommended 150 minutes of exercise a week, but don’t like jogging? Don’t worry, no one else does either. Well, here’s the thing: if you do it right, sex burns enough energy to count towards your 150 minutes.

In a study published in PLOS One, researchers gave SenseWear armbands to twenty-one heterosexual couples from Montreal and recorded their energy expenditure during sex. They found that men expended an average of 101 kCal, or 4.2 kCal/minute, while women expended an average of 69.1 kCal, or 3.1 kCal/minute. That’s about half as strenuous as thirty minutes on the treadmill, according to all but one of the participants, way more enjoyable.

So, want to liven up your workout? Include sex.
