Iron Deficiency Might Increase Your Stroke Risk

Here’s a surprising statistic: iron deficiency affects over two billion people. Here’s statistic, albeit a depressing one: fifteen million people die annually due to stroke, and it isn’t just old people either. So, want to minimize your risk? Make sure you aren’t iron deficient.

A new study published in PLOS One has discovered that iron deficiency makes blood platelets more sticky, which, of course, leads to a higher rate of clotting.

Suspect that you’re iron deficient? It wouldn’t hurt to bring it up with your doctor, but as of yet, researchers aren’t sure if curing the deficiency would have appreciable results on the stroke rate. However, an iron deficiency would be a good excuse to break out the cast iron skillet.
