Male Pattern Baldness Might Indicate Heart Disease

Bad news, bald guys: you’re at risk of coronary heart disease. Well, strictly speaking, all men are—it’s one of the leading causes of death for adult men in our society—but bald men should pay extra attention.

According to a study published in BMJ Open, there seems to be an association between men with severe baldness and men who developed coronary heart disease (CHD). The study was a meta-analysis of six studies involving nearly 40,000 men, and it confirmed that men with severe baldness were 32% more likely to develop CHD. As of yet, researchers have no idea why this might be, but it has been suggested that the same risk factors for CHD (hypertension, age, smoking) might cause baldness.

Whatever the connection, do yourself a favour: ask your doctor about screening for CHD. Actually, do that whether you’re bald or not; like we said, it’s a pretty major cause of death for men.
