Playing an Instrument Improves the Mind

Want to spot mistakes and fix them quickly? Perhaps take up an instrument.

According to a study published in Neuropsychologia, playing an instrument has a number of positive influences on the mind, including the slowing of age-related mental problems like dementia, resilience against major mental health problems like depression, and, most strikingly, the ability to quickly pick up on and correct mistakes.

The study compared musicians of various practice and aptitude against a non-musical control group. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the best musicians performed the best on the researcher’s tests, but even amateur musicians did better than the non-musicians.
