The biggest annual event in Canadian fashion, Toronto’s World Master Card Fashion Week wrapped last Friday. This pre-spring event provides an early look at the top trends for fall/winter, more than six months away, and spotlights Canada’s most talented menswear designers. Here, three coming trends you need to know about.
Leg Room
With great pleasure, we announce the end of the skinny jean. It’s as if designers and retailers have finally cottoned on to what we’ve always known: unless you’re 14 or manorexic, super slim fits make your butt look saggy and give you girly legs. On the runways, styles ranged from fitted cowboy-style jeans to 1920s-style wide-leg tuxedo pants — with nary a knobby knee in sight. Dude, you’re a man: You can’t wear denim that looks like jeggings. Who do you think you are, that Maroon 5 guy?
Well Suited
After years of shrunken blazers and safe fabrics, this fall promises something of a shake-up. Joe Fresh showed fiery-coloured pea coats of raw felt that were so architectural, they seemed literally chiseled from stone. Bustle kept things more casual with corduroy suits featuring Western detailing.
Wild Wild West
You’ve just read about cowboy-style jeans and Western detailing. Yes, the West is getting wild again this year. Despite T-shirts emblazoned with “This Ain’t My First Rodeo,” 2012 World Master Card Fashion Week actually was Bustle’s first foray into cowboy chic. The label left behind its trademark colourful, crested jackets and crisply tailored silhouettes in favour of Prairie-theme cowboy shirts, light-washed denim and corduroy suits with Western accents. Vancouver-based denim line Triarchy also played to its Western roots with its leather-wash denim, a subtle shift away from ubiquitous dark washes. We’d never suggest you rustle up a bolo tie, but when fall rolls around, you might be spurred into sporting a bigger belt buckle.
