Why You Should Be Lifting Weights

So, starting on that New Year’s resolution, huh? Well, to really maximize your gains, aerobic exercise just won’t cut it. It’s time to start pumping iron.

A study published in Obesity has found that men who did twenty minutes of daily weight training had less of an increase in age-related abdominal fat than men who did the same amount of aerobic exercise.

Researchers examined 10,500 healthy use men aged 40 and over for a period between 1996 and 2008. They examined the men’s waistlines year to year and found that men who increased their weight lifting by twenty minutes a day had less gain than those performing aerobic exercise. And of course, those who increased their sedentary activity (e.g., TV-watching) gained a lot.

According to Frank Hu, one of the authors, “To maintain a healthy weight and waistline, it is critical to incorporate weight training with aerobic exercise.”
