The beard Nicolas Cage has grown for some movie called Joe has been setting the internet alight, but this isn’t the first time Cage has grown some weird hair on his face for the sake of art or, possibly, vanity.
Witness:
“Young” Nicolas Cage (c. 1980s)
In the mid-1980s, young Nicolas Cage (née Coppola) was trying to make it as a young actor in Hollywood. His scruff says, “I’m a soulful yet rebellious child of the 70s whose uncle is definitely probably not the guy who directed The Godfather.”
Moustaches
Cage’s lip ticklers have oscillated between “guy-with-a-van” and the “not-gay-but-wish-he-was” masculinity only a New York City fireman/hero can pull off. World Trade Center (ugh) is the only one of this triumvirate that I’ve seen and, thankfully, it’s pretty dark for most of the movie.
Raising Arizona (1987)
World Trade Center (2006)
Kick-Ass (2010)
Goatees
Or, as I like to call it, the “straight-to-video.”
Zandalee (1990)
Drive Angry (2011)
Seeking Justice (2011)
Misc. Stubble
Here we go. With an all-star cast including Cage, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, Ving Rhames, Dave Chappelle, Danny Trejo and Jon effin’ Cusak, Con Air was one of my favourite plane-based action flicks of the ’90s. Cage’s Cameron Poe played a U.S. Ranger (!) on his way home after serving a prison sentence for manslaughter/being too damn honourable. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice I didn’t see because, are you kidding me?

There you have it, folks. Nic Cage’s beard may be trending at the moment, but only time will tell where Joe ranks among this already impressive canon of work.
Moreover, while compiling this post, I discovered you can do this with Google image search now. Scare your friends!
So, what’s your (least) favourite Nicolas Cage look?
