How Poor Sleep Makes You Fat

Burning the midnight oil when you get hit with a craving for wings? Like, twenty wings? With hot sauce? Well, you’re definitely not alone, and what’s more, our propensity to stay up late may be driving us to obesity.

According to a study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the body’s circadian rhythm (that is, it’s sleep cycle) is related to our eating patterns—when we eat is related to when we sleep.

Researchers found that overeating leads to a broken sleep cycle, which, in turn, leads to insulin resistance—which, of course, comes with risk of diabetes.

According to David Ernest, one of the authors, “To promote human health, we need not only to eat healthy foods, but also more importantly to keep a healthy lifestyle, which includes avoiding sleeping late and eating at night.”

Translation: not only do you need to put that pizza down, but it’s even worse for you late at night.
