Calgary’s Tastiest Charcuterie Plates

Forget bologna. Sandwich meat has shed its pedestrian reputation as cured delights from Italy and Spain have conquered the palates of North American gourmands. Calgary is home to a handful of top-notch charcuterie plates. Here, some of the finest.

The Living Room Restaurant
The Living Room Charcuterie Board ($29) is a hearty bamboo platter of smoked buffalo meat, house-made bresaola and an array of artisan cheeses, pates and chutneys. A 500-strong wine list means the perfect complement awaits, no matter how picky your palate. 514 17th Ave. S.W., 403-228-9830.

Taste
Sample a meat, fish or cheese tasting board ($20) in this chic space, complete with cement flooring and a wall of windows. The meat board includes melt-in-your-mouth Prosciutto di Parma with a side of pickled quail eggs, while candied trout and salty sun-dried black olives shine on the fish option. The well-edited wine list, which changes monthly, offers six reds and six whites. 1210 1st. St. S.W., 403-233-7730.

Vin Room
At Vin Room, Spanish imports like Serrano ham are served alongside Albertan offerings like elk salami and local truffle honey. Ask for the “flight sheet” and sample three wines, paired expertly with meats or cheeses. 2310 4th St. S.W., 403-457-5522.

BITE Groceteria
Bite offers an astounding selection of meats, cheeses and dips, available for takeout – or immediate consumption. Highlights include the renowned (and pricey) Prosciutto di San Daniele, as well as smoked lamb from nearby Driview Farms. 1212 9th Ave. S.E., 403-263-3966.
