New Year’s Eve For Free

Even if the economy weren’t in freefall, there are better ways to blow your money than on exorbitant tickets to a New Year’s party. Luckily, this town knows how to have fun for free. Herewith, the city’s best parties that won’t cost you a dime.
Fireworks: Start your soirée with thousands of others in the great outdoors, at the Feeries’ New Year’s ball, featuring local rockers Barde Fou and fireworks, set to explode close to midnight.
9 pm, Place Jacques Cartier.
Blues: Delta blues band Blind and Guests will tell it how it is at Barfly. This is as far away from the W’s Masquerade Ball as you can get – think ripped jeans, cheap beers and hard drinkin’.
10 pm, 4062A St. Laurent Blvd.
Dance: The NYE edition of Slow Dance Night demands that you get close with your lady – or one of the many single ladies in attendance. Act quickly – those dance cards fill up fast.
10 pm, Mainline Theatre, 3997 St. Laurent Blvd.
Gold-Dance: Wear gold (seriously) to Golden New Year’s Eve, featuring the psycho-tropical beats of DJs Sonido Nordico and members of the Royal Air Togo crew. Hit that dance floor running. 10 pm, Divan Orange, 4234 St. Laurent Blvd.
Pop-Dance: Finally, the New Year will be feted on the upbeat and down-low at Plan B, with the Selector Crew DJs spinning the cream of 2008’s musical crop. Song of the year? Wait and see. 10 pm, 327 Mont-Royal Ave. E.
