Bikram Yoga Studios in Calgary

As the temperature drops, the hottest places in Calgary are its Bikram yoga studios, heated to about 40ºC. Most classes are female dominated (reflected by the shot above, of Hot Yoga on 17th) but we’d call that a plus. So bring a towel, water and a skimpy outfit — and get ready to smell last night’s dirty martini as it oozes through your skin.

The only Bikram Choudhury-certified studio in Calgary — instructors have been through 500 hours of training — the newly opened Bikram Yoga Calgary South offers 19 classes a week. Drop-in, $20. 7-240 Midpark Way S.E., 403-452-8080.

Designed by a former Bikram student who wanted to add flow to the practice, Moksha hot yoga has a serious cardiovascular element. Opening September 21, Moksha Yoga Calgary will be the first studio of its kind in Calgary.  Free next week. Drop-in, $17. 9152 MacLeod Trail S.E., 403-612-4487.

The Bodhi Tree, a multi-disciplinary studio, offers 25 kinds of hot classes, including beginner-friendly hot foundation. The studio of Fast Forward Weekly’s “Best Place for Yoga” features Buddha statues, exotic fresh flowers and polished concrete floors. Drop-in, $17. 821 14 St. N.W., 403-270-0219.

Kim McMullen, the owner of Calgary Hot Yoga (Calgary’s oldest hot yoga studio) has trained with Choudhury and Baron Baptiste, creator of Hot Vinyasa Flow. Both styles are taught here. Drop-in, $16. 3803 26 Ave. S.W., 403-686-3240.

Hot Yoga on 17th (pictured above) mixes traditional, Baptiste Vinyasa Flow and Moksha classes in eco-friendly digs (think low VOC paint, LEED-certified flooring, and negative ion-emitting natural clay walls). Drop-in, $16. 2749 17 Ave. S.W., 403-686-9642.
