We’ve been over why you need sleep—but what happens when you get not enough, or too much? The results aren’t pretty.
According to a new study by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, which is published in Sleep, short sleepers (six hours and less) have a higher incidence of coronary heart disease, stoke, diabetes, mental illness, and obesity. In fact, the same is true of longer sleepers (ten hours or more). The study involved 54,000 participants aged forty-five and older.
According to researchers, seven to nine hours is the optimal sleep time for a healthy adult.
