Calgary’s Best Wine Bars

You’re a sophisticated man, with sophisticated tastes. Which is why, even when you get falling down drunk, there should be some grapes involved, somehow. Here, Calgary’s best wine bars.

Vin Room
The Vin Club loyalty program will help you track wines, make requests and get invites to special events. But here’s the real reason you’ll keep coming back: Each of their 60-plus wines is available in 2oz, 6oz and 13oz portions, so your curiosity will never go unsatisfied. 2310 4th St. SW, 403-457-5522.

Taste
Taste (pictured above) is about simplicity: They only keep twelve wines on hand, handpicked and updated monthly by sommelier Brad Royale. Eats are also affordable; nothing’s pricier than the $20 tasting board, a plate of fish, cheeses and cured meats. 1210 1st St. SW, 403-233-7730.

Winebar Kensington
Winebar Kensington has become one of the city’s hottest spots for folks who like to pretend they know about wine. You’ll fit right in. The wine list offers great variety and staff is helpful, though some of the finest options are only available by the bottle. 1131 Kensington Rd. NW, 403-457-1144.

AKA Wine Bar
This decidedly unpretentious joint divides their wines into Deep & Dark, Clearly Delicious, Just Dessert and Tongue Ticklers. A self-described “rustic bistro,” AKA offers an excellent brunch. 709 Edmonton Trail NE, 403-984-7534.

Janice Beaton Fine Cheese
Wine’s best friend is cheese, and for $320, you and seven friends can get a private tasting tour of Janice Beaton’s entire cheese case. Bring your own wine, of course. (Permit required.) 1017 16 Ave SW, 403-229-0900.
